BPI Certification – a study of its origins

The BPI Certification is a very highly respected certification amongst builders, contractors as well as other building professionals. The BPI or the Building Performance Institute is one of the world’s foremost building performance rating institutions. It sets new guidelines and norms for builders and contractors to implement in the construction and building projects so that they are environment friendly. When we look back at the way this premier institution has evolved, the growth has been really astonishing. BPI was started to resolve weatherization issues arising out of sub standard construction quality on the part of the builders. Realizing that there was a lack of trust between the builders and the home owners, BPI soon went about laying down new guidelines and norms regarding the safety and also the overall performance of the building on various parameters.

In order to restore the trust between the building community as well as the home owners, BPI soon started the BPI Certification. This certification was introduced to bring in new safety norms for both the workers as well as the home owners. Buildings were rated according to the stringent norms laid down by the BPI. Any builder seeking the BPI Certification had to strictly implement these norms and at the same time ensure that all his workers were sufficiently trained and skilled to handle the various safety aspects of the building.
