BPI Training for bright career and better buildings

In order to understand how the building efficiency is affected by the internal systems, it is important to understand Building Science. For certification and for undergoing BPI Training, building science is equally important. It is the study of scientific knowledge that focuses on analysis and control of physical happenings affecting the buildings.

BPI emphasizes mostly on architecture, engineering, construction and technology of a building. These factors influence the performance of the building. During the training all these four parameters are closely observed so as to understand how best efficiency can be retained within the building or the premises.

Weather outside the building plays a very important role. Sun, wind, rain, humidity, temperature, snow, lighting, etc. are all factors that are considered while the building architecture is designed. Extreme weather conditions spoil the duct system and insulation of the building. The building envelope needs to be inspected regularly.

Every aspect of the building is broadly classified into various categories and the BPI Training is given to the candidates to specialize in the category or their area of expertise. Some of the categories are Building Analyst, Heating Specialist, Energy Auditor, etc. Training methodology and curriculum is different in every category.

Energy Auditors perform energy audits on existing and new buildings. These professionals can become analysts or consultants after BPI Training. You need to be certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) or the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET).

As auditors you would be able to analyze the building science on Energy efficiency, durability, indoor air quality, thermal comfort, indoor air moisture, etc. You would be used various equipment such as blower door and combustion analyzer. The usage and mechanism of this equipment will be explained during the training sessions. As auditors you will share results with the Home Energy Retrofit and recommend the home for improvised sealing and building envelope or added insulation.

What BPI Certification of a structure states

BPI Certification is all about laying down the rules of building and construction of houses and commercial structures so that no energy or space is wasted and none of the inmates have any difficulty in using the shelter to its best possible use. In a way, BPI Certification is just a new way of putting what mankind has known already. Any architect who has studied ancient Roman and Greek architecture would be able to corroborate this. Buildings ought to be built with best possible lighting and ventilation in natural circumstances. Add to that the facilities that mankind has now come to accept as common: coolers, heaters, air conditioning and mood lighting.

However, the climate change and energy short supply situation being graver than in the times of our forefathers, it has become absolutely necessary to have stronger rules and regulations in place to curb waste usage. This can be done if homes are built with better sealing in apertures (doors, windows, ventilators) so that compulsively heated or cooled air cannot escape into the outer atmosphere. Also switching off electric and electronic devices when not in use prevents them from drinking up electricity even when they are in stand-by mode.

Prudent usage of water in daily domestic chores and industrial procedures and better garbage disposal are important for hygiene. All these parameters mentioned here are the various areas for which a concrete structure is evaluated when it goes in for BPI Certification. When the rating turned in by the unbiased third party that undertakes the BPI Certification confirms that the building is judged on the basis of all these scores individually and upon satisfactory ratings in each parameter, it is deemed sustainable.

Green building technologies which are advocated by BPI Certification standards, although a little more expensive than regular construction practices, are preferred by customers by this reason of sustainability. Also ‘green’ buildings have better present and future market value.

Evolution of BPI Training in India

BPI Certification India is catching up in a big way and we can see that the so-called is not to be left behind where climate control regimes are concerned. It is not only the developed countries that try to reduce their carbon emissions and footprint on the whole. The main culprit is the burgeoning population which has high energy demands in India, combined with illegal tapping of electricity and water resources. But this same population is an asset where requirements for manpower arise.

The main concept behind BPI Training in India is the same as it is anywhere else: An unbiased third party is called in to certify a building for its rating in energy efficiency and sustainability. If there is core incompetency in the way it has been built in the first place, then these plans are altered and renovations are taken up. But BPI Training in India being a fairly recent concept, the implementation of building houses and commercial buildings on plans approved by BPI standards is in vogue now. Older buildings are renovated and refurbished to distribute air conditioning evenly and to make maintenance easy.

To achieve BPI Training in India, it is important for customers at the grass-root level (and not just the corporate customers) to realize that adherence to BPI standards are necessary. By the lower run customers, we do not essentially mean those with lower investments to be made, but those whose needs are more domestic rather than industrial. Consciousness at this level ensures that whole neighborhoods and commercial areas become more energy efficient and sustainable in the long run. But Building Penalization Schemes and Roads & Buildings Development have become very stringent in their practices and insist that rules are followed to the letter. As of now corporate construction companies have taken up on BPI standards. It is time for small-time contractors also to follow suit.

Learning more about BPI Certification India

In India most of the individual homes are constructed by independent building contractors who have no professional education or qualifications to boast of. Most of the work is done by using native wisdom.

At times this leads to cost overruns and quality issues, leading to trust deficit in these contractors. This lack of trust makes it very difficult to find a reliable builder or contractor. In such a situation, it is very important to take the services of a person who is professionally qualified and is able to understand your needs and is able to provide cost effective solutions.

In order to meet these requirements and to set new standards in building performance, BPI started its operations in India. No wonder then, BPI Certification India is fast becoming a very valued certification amongst builders, architects and other related professionals.

BPI stands for Building Performance Institute, which is a building performance rating agency. It rates your building’s performance with regards to safety of the workers on your project as well as the safety of the customers who buy these buildings.

The BPI was initiated as an independent body to resolve various conflicts arising out of weatherization issues that were affecting the construction quality of buildings constructed by private building contractors. This led to loss of trust amongst the builders and customers leading to stagnation of building and construction activity in the US.

As a way of resolving the conflict, BPI introduced a set of stringent norms for the builders involving safety measures to be taken during the construction of any building. Over a period of time these norms became benchmarks for new construction activities.

The BPI Certification India will display that the person holding this certification is found to be competent to conduct independent tests and inspections with regards to the various safety norms and standards. Enroll yourself into a BPI Certification India Training course and become a certified BPI Professional.

BPI Certification India – for better quality buildings

BPI or the Building Performance Institute is an independent establishment that was started during the year 1993. In the mid eighties and early nineties, there was a lot of distrust amongst customers and the private building contractors in the US. This distrust arose owing to weatherization issues which caused quality problems with regard to the overall construction of homes across the US.

The customers were no longer willing to believe the private contractors, whom they considered as people solely interested in fleecing them and providing them with sub standard buildings. Caught between these two were the genuine builders and contractors who were not able to get their projects started since it was difficult to get buyers for them. The BPI was an initiative to resolve the issues and rebuild customer’s trust in the building industry.

Very soon BPI launched a set of stringent quality measures that was appreciated by the genuine builders as well as the customers.  It laid down very tough standards for maintaining the overall efficiency of a building project with relation to the safety and training of workers. It also set new standards with regard to the various standards of heating, cooling and other related activities that determine the performance of a building.

A BPI Certification India will ensure that the performance of a building is according to the guidelines laid down by BPI. What it also demonstrates is that the individual or company that is responsible for the construction has been found to be very competent and is able to independently conduct test and inspections with relation to energy efficiency, water efficiency, Co2 emissions, heating and cooling aspects of the building, etc.

It also indicates that a particular building has been found to be meeting the BPI standards with respect to the various safety norms of workers as well the home owners. Finally, the BPI Certification India demonstrates your contractor’s ability to build better quality buildings in a cost effective manner.

BPI Certification – Is it really useful

BPI Certification is given by the BPI or the Building Performance Institute. This certification is given to those buildings which meet the BPI standards. Before understanding whether it is really useful or not, it is important for us to understand under what circumstances the BPI was initiated in the US during the early 1990s.

The building and construction was undergoing turbulent times in the mid eighties owing to lack of trust on private building contractors by customers. This situation arose due to a variety of reasons. The customers perceived building contractors as somebody who was solely interested in getting the customers money and who was not willing to listen to their grievances.

One of the main reasons for this conflict was the fact that most privately built homes in the US were affected by weatherization issues which was a result of sub standard construction practices on the part of builders and contractors. This led to serious compromise of quality thereby leading to distrust.

When a research was initiated, it was found that most of the workers employed by the private contractors were inadequately trained and were not skilled enough to undertake construction activity. It was during these troubled times that BPI launched a slew of stringent measures to help protect the customer interests and also the genuine builders.

The BPI established a certification process that would be able to certify the performance of a building or project.  The purpose behind this was to establish safety norms for both the home owners and the workers. Further, this certification lays stress on having a skilled and trained work force. So, contractors aspiring for this certification have to ensure that all their workers are adequately skilled and have sufficient knowledge about the various safety parameters as laid down in the BPI guidelines. No wonder then, a BPI certification is very useful for both the customer as well as the builder.
